Dan Smith is the Assistant General Counsel (Regulatory) at Waymo. In this role, he advises Waymo’s senior managers, engineers, and operations personnel on current and developing laws and standards pertinent to automated vehicle safety at the federal and international levels, and serves on industry committees developing definitions and standards related to automated vehicles.

Prior to his role at Waymo, Dan was the Senior Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety at the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, where he was responsible for all NHTSA motor vehicle safety and fuel economy programs including rulemaking, enforcement, research, data and more. Dan has a Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, a JD from the University of San Diego School of Law and he has participated extensively in a wide range of transportation safety and legal issues for over 30 years.
