Dr. Reggie J. Caudill was recently named Dean Emeritus, after retiring in 2020 from the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he had served as Dean and Professor in the Martin Tuchman School of Management and the NJIT Panasonic Endowed Chair of Sustainability. He joined the faculty at New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1990 as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Executive Director of the Center for Manufacturing Systems. He became Executive Director of the Multi-lifecycle Engineering Research Center in 1996, Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 2011, and in 2014 served as interim Dean before becoming Dean of the Martin Tuchman School of Management. With significant funding and encouragement from the Leir Foundation in 2017 while also serving as Dean, Dr. Caudill established and served as the founding director of the Leir Research Institute at NJIT to explore sustainability and the business, economic, and societal impacts of disruptive events and technologies.

Dr. Caudill began his research career in the field of automated personal rapid transit systems with his work on intersection merging strategies in 1973. His 1976 PhD dissertation, under the guidance of Dr. J. Edward Anderson and Dr. William Garrard at the University of Minnesota, involved seminal research in vehicle-follower longitudinal control for automated personal transit vehicles. Dr. Caudill joined Dr. Alain Kornhauser and Dr. Jerry Lutin, at Princeton University in 1977 as Assistant Professor in the Transportation Program, Department of Civil Engineering, to continue research into autonomous vehicle systems and automated highways.

More recently, Dr. Caudill’s research has been related to industrial ecology, sustainability and industrial systems with a focus on business data science, decision analysis, and management strategies. A significant aspect of his teaching and research has involved systems analysis, simulation and decision making in industrial and management systems, including design for environment, production operations, risk management, and corporate sustainability. While on sabbatical in the 2019-2020 academic year, Dr. Caudill served as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University working with Dr. Kornhauser and some of his students.
